Yes, and Fred deletes these accounts as often as he can.

I have been deleting them. Unfortunatly, I work full time and have a family so I can't sit on guard watch all the time.

no prob

the spamers only appear to have been a problem these past few months. I don't know enough about computers to remedy the problem or even if there is a fix available. I suspect PHPBB would address this in their security revisions. Unfortunatly, in the interim, we are stuck with spam. I find our latest guy pretty funny though. LOL

Did you mean Belay as in Cape Enrage Belay. Or perhaps you meant via fereta. In France they have great via fereta. Have you checked out Monaco in France? Black Jack at Monaco Casino. Or did you mean....

This would be more of a suggestion for the PHPBB dev team but the registration pages that have distorted images in them, that ask the user to identify what the text in the images is(I hope that description made sense) would be one way to block the spammers. All the spammers are basically just auto-posting programs and those auto-posters cant identify what numbers and letters are in a picture. There might be a mod out there somewhere too that would bring this functionality to the PHPBB registration page. I will look into it and suggest something more specific if I can find anything.

OMG we now have about 750 users in the last week or so. HELP! anyone.

thicks, the disable spam bot MOD you posted before does not appear to verify authenticity of posters for new accounts but only prevents spam messages

I'm desperate for a fix.

If I activate the "Admin Confirm" in administration pannel then all new registrations have to be accepted manualy by email. I can't manage this on my own but what if a few of our users had the email password and log-in to check it periodicaly?

what I need is someone with spare time, knowledge of php, spam, computers and all that good/bad stuff...

Hopefully we can find a solution. Unfortunatly, as soon as you find a fix for spam they find a counter attack.

This site http://www.bigwalls.net/forum/ uses one of those identify the characters in this image things when you register. Maybe the admin can tell you how to set it up.

Hope this helps(taken from a post on the PHPBB support board, link to follow):

After cleaning out another round of spam registrations from our forums, I decided to make a subtle change to the worst-hit boards to screw up the "registration bots" used for this. In some cases, you can not take advantage of v2.0.11's "visual confirmation", which also stops the bots, but this should work.

It is a simple fix, but I will not post it as a regular MOD, because customization is the key here. The RegBots work by going directly to the submission of the form information, bypassing the various agreement screens by simply setting "agreed=true". Fortunately, web form variables are CasE-sEnsiTivE, so simply changing the all-lower-case name "agreed" to mixed-case will still allow manual registrations to work, but will simply present a bot's request with the COPPA form, and not make any entries into your users table.

The affected files are:

admin/admin_users.php
includes/usercp_avatar.php
includes/usercp_register.php

With a text editor, search for "agreed", and replace it with your own choice of mixed case, or even something like "IAmInAgreement". As long as all references to this variable are identical, registration and profile changes work as before... except for those trying to bypass the system.

This is from a post in 2005, not sure if the spammers have gotten around it... here is the full article, it would probably be worth the time to read it all before implimenting(it isnt that long). I will keep looking on the PHPBB support board and see if I can come up with any other suggestions....

This is another post of interest possibly concerning Visual Confirmation option in the admin panel. It is a bit of a heavy read but basically says that the visual confirmation option isnt supported by all the visual or display templates, then suggests how to fix this(I think... limited time.....).

Hope this stuff is of some help.

I just deleted over 500 spam users. Phew!

I finaly found a fix (somewhat) for deleting spam. The problem before was that in order to delete a user I had to search the user, copy the name, look-up the user and then delete the user. Very time consuming if you have to delete multiple users. So now I found a MOD for the admin panel that allows me to delete users with a checklist. This way I can quickly keep on top of spam accounts. So then if I can get the board moderators to stay on top of the spam messages (if any) we'll be all set. :)

cheers
