Fred,

The reason for this SMTP error when posting may be the SMTP address (outgoing email server address) entered into your PHP settings is incorrect.

When someone posts a message, the board may be configured to email users when there is a new post or a new post on their thread, etc. This may be failing and why the error is ocurring.

That's just my guess.

Thank you Andrew. I have changed the settings and seems to work now. I did a test and claimed a new account with alternate email address and it seemed to work.

whatever you did to fix the errors just let a whole slew of spambots in. I just deleted about 15 from this morning.

The spam bots are back for a different reason. We had temporarily turned the new user activtion to be admin only but the problem with that was I wasn't doing my job. New users weren't able to join. It's easier to filter out the bots and spam than to block everyone and approve new legit users by email. Scott W was working on a new phpbb3 forum for us but he seems to have disapeared. So I had to re-activate the feature to allow new users to claim accounts.
