End of CEC

Postby Fred » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:46 pm

I will be shutting down the dreamhoust server soon. No need fo my other website and it's not a expanse I want tor carry anymore. Hopefullly someone will pick-up the torch and everything will be transfered smoothly. Otherswise, the end of CEC may be near.

Sene me a PM and if you want to transfer the databsae to another server. We can arrange for that.

Yesterday I mentioned to Bec that you had not logged in for two weeks. I guess this shouldn't be a surprise.

I can't say I would miss logging in four times a day to check for spam, but this site does fill a vital role for Canadian climbing.

woah. I'd say this forum is pretty valuable for the community for sure.

Perhaps CNS can pick up the torch here? Out of curiosity, what is the cost per month/year for a site like this? Just wondering how much budget it would eat up for someone if they took it over.

yet another reason why there should be an association or climber's club for NB, etc.

No ONE person should have been expected to pay for the upkeep of the forum anyway!

I'd be happy to take over CEC hosting - I have plenty of free server space and the knowledge to run it as well. I'll talk to Fred in private messages about getting the databases transferred over ASAP.

CNS has the bandwidth and hosting space to take the climbeasterncanada forum and we can afford to pay the domain fees. What we don't have is the manpower to start moderating and the other stuff you admins do.

I personally don't want to see the forum shut down, and there's certainly lots of historical information contained here that would be sad to lose, including some of the most hilarious flame threads I've ever seen.

Thanks Mick-that's great!

I can't speak for all the other current
Moderators, but I'll certainly stay on with doing my part.

I'm not exactly sure what you think would change. If you already have someone minding the hamster when it falls off the wheel you have the toughest part covered. I log on 3-4 times a day and delete spam and spam users, and the other mods delete spam as they see it.

With exception of the occasional flare up there is very little actual moderating that needs to be done. I don't think any of the Mods are planning to go anywhere. That said my time is pretty limited and might be next to none this winter. It would be nice if someone else also had an Admin hat as well to get rid of the spammers.

Sam... that's a great offer. I know you're keen on throwing yourself deep into climbing this year. However, I think letting Climb Nova Scotia take the lead on this forum transfer might be best. Since you've obviously got some skill in the area maybe you could step up as a forum mod as Nathan suggested or perhaps do some development work on adding functionality? In the end, I think having a community org. run this community service is a good fit. I'm glad CNS is able to step up. Thanks.

I would hope that nothing would change and I'm glad you guys take care of the rifraff. CNS has an Admin account already I believe, although I'm sure we've never used it.
Samuel, your offer is appreciated and I'm sure your expertise will be called upon to help run the board.

Fred, please hang in there until next week if you can - this week is insanity for me but I'll touch base with you and we can take care of transfer and early next week if that's alright.

I think transfer to CNS is the best option.

I will have to give access to my accounts for someone to do the transfers. Let me know when you are ready.

The site is good until 2012-12-14 so you have some time.

I have no issues with an already established climbing-website host taking it over as opposed to me! If you need any help with the transfer / nameservers / set-up I'd be happy to help out. And given that I won't be hosting it, I am interesting in helping moderate the forums, if there are spots available.

Fred if this gets to the point-of-no-return where it's going to be shut down within days and it hasn't been transferred to CNS servers, let me know.

I'm not with CNS so I have no part in organizing switching that over... but hopefully somebody from CNS steps up before it expires!

I have passed on the http://www.dreamhost.com account info to CNS. It's in their hands now. :)
