Climbing at Minister's Face

Postby Jamie Simpson » Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:58 am

Hi Folks, (I'm wearing my work hat in this posting)

As probably many of you know, the Nature Trust of New Brunswick (http://www.naturetrust.nb.ca) now owns pretty much the entire cliff feature on Long Island - known as Minister's Face.

It's an extremely important place for ecological reasons - the cliff face is home to a bunch of very rare plants (some found no-where else in New Brunswick), as well as one of the 10 known nesting sites for Peregrine Falcons (a threatened species) in the Province.

We want to make sure the rare plants and Peregrines remain undisturbed by climbers, so we're asking climbers to respect a few guidelines concerning use of the cliff. Please check out http://www.naturetrust.nb.ca/pere-rock_ice.php. (there's also a photo of Dave and Stef on Grand Manan, and another of Dave on Thin Air, Cathedrel Ledge).

I'll also leave some information at the Fredericton wall for folks to check out, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Another good site to check out about climbing and Peregrines is http://www.southeastclimbing.com/faq/faq_peregrines.htm.

So long as the plants and Peregrines remain undisturbed, I think the Nature Trust won't oppose climbers continuing to use the cliff from time to time (we certainly can't endorse it, for liability reasons).

All the best,
Jamie Simpson
