Broken wrists

Postby STeveA » Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:36 am

Last night my son, Jon, fell while bouldering. He has broken both his wrists and will be in casts for 6 weeks. At present he is in a lot of pain, but hopefully things will work out okay. In the meantime, if anyone has spare pain killers I am sure Jon would welcome donations.

Sorry to hear about that. All the best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Jon! And I wish him all the patience he'll need for the frustration with all the "important things" you need at least one hand for...!

sorry to hear that. we (NB climbers) seem to be getting lots of limb damage this year...

of course this is hindsight... but i think we all need a lesson (or review) on bouldering safety... ie., correct spotting, crashpad placement, visualization of potential hazards etc...

a few injuries in the UNB gym this year could have been avoided with better spotting (or some spotting period) and more awareness of mats etc. i realize these are indoor injuries and i dont' know the details of Jon's, but the same applies both indoor and out.

to a speedy recovery Jon.

I like the cut of your jib. and the shape of your sail.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Wrists

Postby STeveA » Thu Apr 19, 2007 12:24 pm

Just got back from the hospital with Jon. They X-rayed and Cat scanned the wrists, and it does not look like they have to operate. The right wrist is a clean break while the left has lots of fractures and lumps. They re-casted him and we go back in a couple of weeks. We are starting to figure out some exercises to keep up his strength and the doctors think he will be okay.

good news that they won't have to operate.

Might want to talk to Cory Goodman about exercises to help keep his stregnth up. He's the man for that kind of thing. :)

Hey guys, thanks for the sympathy.
The pain has gone down quite a bit now, and I am slowly regaining abilities to do things. I still can't open bottles but I am getting there.

It was my own fault, but these things happen.

I just forgot to miss! :D

Hey Jon, I broke my wrist last year and was in a cast for a month. I feel your pain... After a few weeks when it wasn't so painfull I was able to do some basic weight room exercises using a short loop of webbing. You can hook the sling over the casts and around the handles of the curl machine, fly machine etc.. It helped keep me sane just to feel that I was doing something. I tried riding a bike too, but that was a bad idea...

Good luck,

Stefan.

I'm glad to hear it guys.

I was out to Bald Peak on 1 JULY with some great people from Riverview. I even managed to climb Finger Fun 5.10a. IT's hard!
