Rock season has started!!

Postby Dom » Sun Mar 04, 2012 8:12 pm

Hibernation is over! http://www.yr.no/place/Canada/New_Brunswick/Welsford/long.html

Who else is motivated?

Don't forget, this time of year-
-Hand warmers in the chalk bag is key
-extra hand warmers in your shoes while you're not climbing is good
-Sun is really good
-Shade, wind, snowmelt are bad
-friction is amazing right now!

A few of us were at Cedar point today and even though the sun didn't come out, it was great!

Was out yesterday at Sunnyside and I'd say that 30% of the routes were dry. That was yesterday so with today's heat I'm optimist that it's now up to 60-70%. We only climbed 2 routes because it was grayish and windy (cold). Went bushwacking instead.

Today we went out to Cochrane lane and it was T-shirt weather on nice granite cracks. A lot of stuff was seeping but we managed to climb Reindeer land, leviathan, Sweet potato pie, About a rope and finished with a 2 pitch Painted black and that 5.4 pitch above it (Pink stripes on Grey canvas?) Aside from the odd hold, these routes were dry! Yep rock season has started!

I think 2012 was a bit of an anomaly.

This is more like it :)

Having said that I am looking forward to rock season starting. Lots of work to do at McQuirk!

Sam and I climbed in Cl today :D We stuck to the cave area which was almost 100% dry. We climbed Leviathan which was completely dry. From the looks of things I would say there is certainly some other dry rock to be had but that could change from day to day. I was quite surprised to find dry rock after all the precipitation we had yesterday!

Yeah, theres enough dry stuff to climb for sure and climbing cave area in the sun was awesome, the only caveat being the waist-deep snow on the trail up -- maybe it will have melted more by next weekend, but it might be worthwhile to bring snowshoes just in case if anyones planning on going out ;)
