Bad Ethics in Sunnyside

Postby theriault » Fri Aug 16, 2013 8:48 am

I was climbing in Sunnyside yesterday, warmed up on Covalance 5.8 and noticed that it had seen a LOT of traffic witch I thought was awesome, as I got about mid way (the crux area) I found oversized tic marks everywhere….already bad ethics to not remove them… but what really got me going was the the person or group not only had those over size tics everywhere but they also added big X's made of chalk next to key holds…… I'm hoping this was made purely by ignorance….

X's made of chalk are made to mark loose/death blocks or flaks or any other sort of danger on a route…. Nothing else!
Tic marks are a great tool when working a project…. But please remove them after you are done with the route.

These are very basic ethic rules that every climber should know.

I agree with Marty. Tick marks are a worthy tool but should be removed after. It's bad ethic to leave them.
One trick to remove them is get a toothbrush - Your chalk bag has a rubbery thing to hold it.
With a toothbrush and a bit of saliva, all tick marks are easily removed.

Happy climbing, finally some nice weather!

As Thimot and Austin and I left a group of fairly beginner military guys showed up... might have been them. I see them at the wall often enough, I'll ask if it was them and explain the ethics ;)
Great climbing links:

If I'm posting here, I'm probably at work.

Just tell them that brushing the chalk marks off the holds reduces the chances of a tick infestation.

Megan and I were climbing it before Sam and Austin. We did leave some of the holds chaulky, but no x's.
