Ice!

Postby beyond_gravity » Sun Nov 23, 2008 9:17 pm

So the snow is here, which leads me hopeful that some ice is going to be showing up!

I'm new to Nova Scotia, and am wondering if anyone knows of where you can ice/mixed climb around here?

I'm also looking for anyone who wants to head out and do some ice or mixed routes! I'm free weekends and have a car, a spare set of tools and crampons, and full rack

Where exactly is around here? For early season ice you'll probably have to head up to Cape Breton or to New Brunswick.

There's not snow in Cape Breton. In fact the temps have been warmer than halifax.

around here would be Halifax for me.

Bedford highway you say? as in there is climbing right off the highway?

I noticed a building downtown just up the street for MEC was covered in a nice thin layer of ice....i'm guessing ice buildering if frowned upon...

not much more than non-ice buildering... but the fines are slightly higher.

Bedford Highway has a spot that's kinda like an ice thermometer... it's not a climbing area... just a good indicator of what's happening in ice world

I know of a good waterfall near the valley on the north mountain but I'm doubtful that it will stay cold long enough to freeze it.

I heard a rumor that you were planning to use your old top ropes to form the framework for an ice climbing wall outside in the back of your new building, Sean. Great idea!!! What sort of rates will you be charging?

Ummm fire hydrant? Ice doesn't burn Dood!

I figure the way he'll do it is by pulling up one or two of those garden hoses with all the little holes when it's below zero out. Maybe use those Engineered Roof Anchors that my company installs all the time for anchors? I'm not sure what Sean's got planned for that... but he's such a smart individual, I'm sure he'll figure it out.

The only ice at the new GZ will be in the beer fridge keeping the suds cool.

Well!

So much for the 'Flattery gets you everywhere' theory.

Sign me up for one (maybe two....ish) of those beer. I'm quite excited about yer new digs. I've been promoted to desk surfer and need some sweet release.

I guess I'll have to build my own artificial ice climbing emporium using the 55' training tower in the RAT parking lot. Theories on how to prevent massive icefall during warm periods welcome.

Bring the cold please!

Nova Scotia Ice is a temptress, a she-devil, who has led me on so many times, only to stand me up, leaving me looking foolish with nothing but an ice tool in my hand.

I am going back to bed until mid-January, with a bag of chips, a six pack of beer, and some good climbing mags.

Wake me up when we have had two straight weeks of cold nights, there is a good layer of snow and ice on the ground, and the sun has begun pressing the meltwater into shape.

Then it's, "Dibs on the first (wet) lead at the Flintstone Quarry!"
A monk asked Quiglin Shiqian, "What is a person who has realized the Way?"
Quiglin said, "Embracing the ice and snow, head and eyebrows held high."
