From the Google news site:

TBILISI, August 4 (RIA Novosti, Marina Kvaratskhelia) - A Canadian mountaineer has been struck and killed by falling ice in the Caucasus in the northern Georgian region of Svaneti, a local police chief said Thursday.

Peter Everet was killed on August 1 as he and his companion, Michel Dorce, were trying to ascend Mount Shkhara. It took Dorce two days to get to the nearest police station to report the fatality.

A team of rescuers is now being formed to recover the climber's body from the mountains.

I only had the pleasure of climbing with Pete a couple of times. All I can say is that he was a good guy who loved the sport. He was incredibly strong on the ice. My condolences to his friends and family. Hope Mike comes home safe. Very sad day.

Thank you all for your concern and kind words. I will be speaking with Pete's family and close friends before a media statement is made. I will tell his story only in a manner that suits their desires. This has been a very difficult time for all involved and is now nearing it's completion.

The period of my life involving Pete was filled with climbing. Climbing is a gift we gave each other. Pete's gift to me is one I will cherish, respect, and polish for the rest of my time here on earth.

Thank you for posting that link, Conan. I saw the front page on a news stand, but was not able to read the article.
