Honestly I'm a little dissapointed in it. There's a lot of stuff missing in it.

But I've still been flipping through it while eating breakfast the past few days.

I think that's pretty much understood with the MEC catalog these days -- a little disappointing.

Are you folks really buying that much gear that you need MEC catalogue to list all the stuff they have in stock. I heard their website has also a listing of stuff in stock and it doesn't always match with the catalogue. Sorry to sound like an ass but i'm just really confused, what are you guys expecting?

There has also been times that I've seen things in their store that they didn't have on their website. Not a huge deal, but I can't drive into Toronto everytime I want to look through their store. I like having the option to mail order.

Some decent climbing gear porn.

Call me old fashioned, but I think it is way easier to thumb through a good cataloge than sift through dozens of links to try and compair gear. If they are going to kill trees to put out a cataloge why not make it useful?

you must admit that they have certainly included much more gear and less clothes and carry bags in the latest catalogue

for the record I always use the website but like to flip through the catalogue when it comes in the mail

cheers

Now I don't have a catalogue handy so correct me if I'm wrong... but I believe they print to 100% post consumer recycled paper. And they no longer just send catalogues without requests. And they only send 1/household. And they offer an internet site to reduce their paper requirements.

MEC board of directors = dirty tree huggers

ps. How do I quote such that it will indicate who wrote the original text?

That's how you include their name.

"MEC saved the following resorces by using Domtar EarthCote made with 35% post-consumer waste and elemental chlorine free, and New Leaf Reicarnation made with 100% recycled fiber, 50% post consumer waste, and processed clorine free."

So what ever that means.

I don't think we ever requested a catalog. They sent one to us because I ordered a bunch of stuff on-line that the store never carries and isn't in the printed catalog either.

MEC website wrote:When we wanted a more ecologically sustainable paper than any we could source. We asked our paper broker, New Leaf Paper, for help in developing one and they worked with Domtar to create Domtar EarthCote™. Since its initial use for our 2006 catalogues, the post-consumer waste content (paper collected through home and office recycling programs) has increased from 35 to 40%.

So there you have it. The catalog is still 60% new trees.

It could also be that I've always recieved the catalogs in the mail and I remembered to change our address with them a little while back. The rest of the catalogs must have been sent to my uncle's.

I like getting them, even if I think there are flaws.

You forgot the " "

If you hit the "quote" button at the top of who ever's post it will open a reply with that post quoted. Carefully chop out the parts that aren't needed and there you go. Or you can cut and paste and write in the code for it too.

It was addressed to me. If you don't order anything, I forget for how long, they quit sending catalogs.

Or if you order lots you get paid dividens. I have received two checks since I've been a member for around $75-$100 yay!!!

REI is about 10%, 8% if you use a credit card for the purchase. There is no dividend on sale stuff. You get a dividend whether you spend $10 a year or $10,000. On top of that they have a Visa card where you get a full 10% on REI purchases and 1% on anything else. Truthfully I've got more back from REI for buying gear at MEC than I have got from MEC. My dividend from buying gas, food and other stuff I'd buy anyway was generally $70-$80 a year.

I won't get into the 20% off coupon that comes with the dividend.

Yeah, it sucks that its so hard to get a MEC dividen. I get all jealous when I hear the American trying to decide what they'll spend their REI dividen on that year, every year.

And Nathan, I didn't realize the cataloge was addressed to you.

MEC Share Value Payouts

Postby MEC Halifax » Wed Apr 25, 2007 8:58 am

I've shopped at REI as well and you get your 8, 10, or 15% back every year on regular priced items that you purchased...which is nice since I just got my first dividend cheque from MEC this past year. Keep in mind though REI's mark up on products can be 100%, and maybe even 200% compared to MEC's 33.7% average mark up!

Food for thought :)

I'll take a low mark-up over a dividend any day.
