Yeah that's a pretty cool website.
The route finding photos are the ones that they use in the actual CAA level 1 course.
As you say it's not an alternative to the actual CAA training. It does however cover pretty much all the classroom portion of the course.
The parts that is missing are the hands on snow stuff, the daily backcountry trips and most importantly- the decades of combined experience that the super highly qualified instructors bring to the table.
I'd strongly recommend CAA's avalanche course to anyone interested in spending quality time in the mountains. Not only is it informative- but it's a really fun week.

Just to clarify, there are several courses to choose from:
- Recreational Avalanche Course (typically 2 evening classroom sessions plus two days in the field)
- Advanced Recreational Avalanche Course (typically a full day of classroom with 4 days in the field)
- Avalanche Operations Level 1 (a full week, mostly in the field)
Get in touch with Rob Lemmon if you need more info on the Recreational Courses, he's a CAA qualified instructor.
For the Level 1 you gotta go to BC or Alberta.

The Justice Institute is who put that online course together.
They run paramedics course. The Ground Search and Rescue course, Rope Rescue etc. They maintain the manuals keep them uptodate and ensure that standards are meet.

Yeah it is weird. I think they must of started off doing Police training. Then I think the Provincal Emergency Program asked them to develop courses, and offer certification and give out little diplomas for when you complete a course.
