Access Alert - The Hatchery

Postby Ascent/Escalade NB » Mon Mar 17, 2014 12:44 pm

Climbers,

This morning Ascent N.B. has learned of an access issue at ‘the Hatchery’. This newly discovered ice climbing area quickly rose to fame over the past 6 weeks and has been described as some of N.B.’s best ice. Cars have been lined up at the trail-head every weekend since its discovery.

As of yesterday, a ‘no-trespassing’ sign has been installed by the landowner at the trail-head. Our initial indications are that this applies only to the land that the snow-shoe trail passes. The climbing areas are on separate properties.

Ascent N.B. is contacting the landowner to assess their concerns, and to work towards restoring access for the community. In the interim, we are asking all ice climbers to please respect this landowner’s wish.

It’s our hope to have a suitable solution very soon. If none can be reached, we’re looking at a potential alternate route to access this area. At the same time, Ascent N.B. has already been in contact with the landowner of the main ‘Hatchery’ area and is in the early stages of securing a long-term access agreement.

Again, we’d ask you to please respect the ‘no trespassing’ signage while we work to find a solution. More updates to come.

The Exec,
Ascent N.B.

Now that ice season is finally on here is an update of the current access agreement concerning The Hatchery. The landowner has agreed to allow any members of Ascent New Brunswick to travel across his land to gain access to The Hatchery ice crag. If you would like to climb there park your car on the side of the bridge across from The Abbey (the home next to the river) if at all possible. Please do not park near the home. Before leaving your car place your Ascent NB membership card on your dash so that it will be clear to the landowner who is travelling on his land. There is no longer any need to call in advance as was the case last year. Just display your card and you are good to go. There is a new access trail that was cut in late fall of 2014. The trail has roughly the same entry point as before but then goes more eastward (right) toward the ice. The trail is marked with blue blaze. Thanks for your cooperation.

Went to climb to the Hatchery today, good job on the trail Greg! also, shes a little hard to spot, go about 20-40m up from the old trail and spot a big dead tree stomp about 4-5m high, its huge and dry, enter the forest here and you should see the first blaze in some apple trees. Also, half way, the new trail meets the old one blazed in orange by Luc and I last winter, so from there follow orange!
again Good job Greg!

Thanks but credit for the new trail should go to Joe, Shawn and Denise. They did the bulk of the work and I agree they did a great job!
