Parlee Brook definately has some ice right now, but mostly frozen moss. After the temperatures this week...it is giving +1 it will take another week of cold to bring it back, but I'm betting that by mid next week if we have 4 or 5 nights of freezing temps there will be ice enough to Top Rope. You can count that Fred and I will be out, maybe as early as this sunday to check it out.

Also...as for ice in NS.... it forms long after the stuff in NB. So I'd say it will be at least the end of December before you see much action there. Once Hayes Falls and Waterfall Wall freeze up you'll get some good ice in NS.

But seriously...why would you drive to NS when you are equally close to Parlee?? it is by far the best/most consistant ice climbing that the Maritimes has.

Hey Cara,

Postby shannon » Mon Nov 28, 2005 10:50 am

Yup, true. I'm planning to check out Parlee Brook late december (27-28, or 28-29) and stay the night over there. Since I'll be also in the area, we'll probably check out Hayes Falls too. We could try to meet up with you at Hayes falls, but I am uncertain of the date. We'll be visiting relatives in Florenceville, so may bookend the trip with ice climbs.

I just was reading ice reports from last year. I'm excited.

Hayes falls isn't really worth the drive for you. it is Grade 2+ ice at best, and though fun for beginners, or for a quick trip from Fredericton in the evenings, it isn't that great for a long drive. You'd be better off going into Waterfall Wall assuming it is frozen.

where's that?

Postby shannon » Mon Nov 28, 2005 11:36 am

I saw some pix of the area. Where's Waterfall wall?

I recently got shannon (shannette) some boots and crampons, so I was thinking she'd hasve a learner's go at hayes falls for the experience. Besides, it's on our way.

Hayes Falls is near Woodstock...i don't think that is on your way from PEI...unless they moved the road....

It is very beginner friendly and not at all intimidating. a great place to start for sure.

Parlee is not the place to take a beginner...especially if they aren't all that comfortable on a rope yet. It is pretty intimidating. But so much fun. :)

Waterfall wall is in Welsford. Doubt there will be much there until after Christmas unless the weather takes a cold turn soon.

My buddy Devin will be climbing with me in Parlee, and shanette will be learning at Hayes falls. I can't wait!

Shannon, when will you be in florenceville? I'm from that area, and will be there over christmas. I'm sure justin and I will be going up to grandfalls and will show you around if you want. Its a climber friendly place, well most of the time. Hayes falls needs a lot of cold weather to freeze. Its much easier to find off the old highway rather than the new one, plus there is a parking lot.

PS who are your relatives in florenceville?

My wife's relatives are there way up on a hill past some bible camps.

Those ice shots are incredable! That website looks great, who runs it? Fred?

thats funny, saying " past a few bible camps", and I know exactly where you are talking about. I grew up about 2 miles from there. One of those camps has a great outdoor climbing wall.

I'm PM you with more info

yeah that's my personal webpage. I try to keep track of all the places I've climbed. Grand Falls is wicked. Great for toproping too and a 30m approach. Can't beat that.

Anyone want to go on Dec. 30th? I'll be passing through that way on my way back to Ottawa.
